Which websites do AI engines cite? We counted 3,084 citations
By the CiteFinder team · November 2, 2026 · 6 min read
When an AI assistant recommends companies, it usually links its sources. Those links show you which pages decide who gets named. We counted them across two full CiteFinder scans: 25 buyer questions each, asked on ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, with web search on.
- Payroll software (scan of Gusto, October 30, 2026): 175 answers, 1,325 citations.
- AI visibility tools (scan of CiteFinder, October 31, 2026): 175 answers, 1,759 citations.
That's two categories, not the whole web, so read it as a pattern, not a law. The pattern was the same in both.

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode often link through redirect URLs that hide the destination (304 in the AI tools scan), so those aren't counted above.
What the numbers say
- The leaders' own sites are cited the most. In payroll, Gusto, ADP, Rippling and OnPay were four of the top eight sources. In AI tools, Semrush, Profound and Otterly were three of the top four. Vendors that publish detailed pages about their category get quoted as sources.
- Review publishers are the other half. Forbes, TechRadar, Fit Small Business, People Managing People, HubSpot's blog and Zapier: established sites with “best X” lists. One Zapier roundup was cited 17 times on its own.
- Reddit was a small share. 12 of 1,325 citations in payroll and 20 of 1,759 in AI tools, about 1% each. It matters, but less than the hype suggests for these categories.
- Being named isn't the same as being cited. Gusto was named in 170 of 175 answers, but gusto.com was linked as a source in only 66 of them (38%). Most of the time AI recommended Gusto based on other sites.
- Engines cite very different amounts. In the AI tools scan, Claude averaged 17 citations per answer, Gemini 12, Copilot and Perplexity about 10, ChatGPT 9, AI Overviews 7 and AI Mode 4.
What to do with this
- Find the 10 to 20 pages cited for your buyers' questions, and get onto the ones that name competitors but not you. (Step-by-step plan.)
- Publish your own detailed category pages: AI quotes vendors that explain the category, not only their product.
- Keep G2, Capterra and your directory profiles complete; they show up as sources in most software categories.
CiteFinder lists every page AI cited for your questions, and flags the ones that name your rivals but not you.
Questions
Which websites do AI engines cite most?
In our scans of payroll software and AI visibility tools (3,084 citations across 7 engines), the most-cited sources were the leading vendors' own sites and established review publishers such as Forbes, TechRadar, HubSpot's blog and Zapier. Review sites like G2 and Capterra also appeared.
Does ChatGPT cite Reddit a lot?
Less than often claimed, at least in our data: Reddit was about 1% of citations in both categories we measured (12 of 1,325 and 20 of 1,759) across all 7 engines.
If AI names my brand, does it link to my website?
Not necessarily. Gusto was named in 170 of 175 answers in our scan, but its own site was cited in only 66 of them. AI often recommends a brand based on what other sites say.
