We asked 7 AI engines to recommend AI visibility tools. Here's who they named (and who they didn't)
By the CiteFinder team · November 2, 2026 · 6 min read
On October 31, 2026 we ran CiteFinder on itself. It asked 25 questions a buyer of AI visibility software would ask, such as “What are the best AI search visibility tracking tools available right now?” and “Which GEO tools offer white-label reporting for agencies?”, to 7 AI engines with web search switched on: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. That is 175 answers, 172 of which came back without an error.
CiteFinder was named in 0 of them. That's expected for a product launched days earlier, and it's why we're publishing this: it's an honest baseline, and the data shows exactly who AI recommends in this category and why.
The tools AI named most
Number of answers (out of 172) that named each tool, counting spelling variants such as “Otterly.AI” and “OtterlyAI” once:
| Tool | Answers naming it | Share | Engines that named it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Profound | 119 | 69% | 7 of 7 |
| Semrush | 115 | 67% | 7 of 7 |
| Otterly.AI | 113 | 66% | 7 of 7 |
| Peec AI | 113 | 66% | 7 of 7 |
| Scrunch | 51 | 30% | 6 of 7 |
| AthenaHQ | 40 | 23% | 7 of 7 |
| Ahrefs Brand Radar | 38 | 22% | 7 of 7 |
| SE Ranking | 37 | 22% | 7 of 7 |
| Rankscale | 18 | 10% | 7 of 7 |
| HubSpot AEO | 18 | 10% | 6 of 7 |
| Writesonic | 16 | 9% | 5 of 7 |
| Promptwatch | 15 | 9% | 7 of 7 |
| ZipTie | 15 | 9% | 5 of 7 |
| CiteFinder | 0 | 0% | 0 of 7 |
Four tools form a clear top tier: each shows up in about two out of every three answers, on every engine. After that there's a steep drop. The engines largely agree with each other: almost every tool on the list was named by all seven.
Where the engines got their answers
The 172 answers cited 1,759 links in total. 304 of them were Google redirect links that hide the destination, so we left those out. The most-cited sites:
| Site | Times cited | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| blog.hubspot.com | 51 | Publisher (guides and roundups) |
| semrush.com | 33 | Vendor |
| tryprofound.com | 29 | Vendor |
| otterly.ai | 25 | Vendor |
| therankmasters.com | 21 | Agency blog (roundups) |
| reddit.com | 20 | Community |
| siftly.ai | 18 | Vendor blog (roundups) |
| zapier.com | 17 | Publisher (one roundup article) |
| techradar.com | 17 | Publisher (reviews) |
Two kinds of page dominate: “best tools” roundups on established publishers, and the vendors' own sites. The top four tools appear on both: they publish a lot about the category themselves, and they're in nearly every roundup. A single Zapier article, “The best AI visibility tools”, was cited 17 times on its own.
Why we got zero, and what we're doing about it
Our own site passed every readiness check (AI crawlers allowed, llms.txt, schema, readable text), and it still didn't matter. A technically perfect site that nobody else writes about doesn't get recommended. AI engines build their shortlists from what other sites say. So our plan is the same one our reports give customers:
- Get into the roundups AI already cites. Pitch the authors of the HubSpot, Zapier and TechRadar articles above with something worth adding.
- Publish pages that answer the exact questions. Comparison pages (like CiteFinder vs Profound) and guides like this one.
- Be present where AI looks for opinions: Reddit threads, review sites and directories.
- Re-check weekly and see which questions move first.
We'll publish the follow-up numbers. If you want to see the same picture for your own category, the free scan runs 3 of your buyer questions across all 7 engines.
Method
- 25 buyer questions, generated from the category “AI search visibility tracking software (AEO and GEO tools) for brands and agencies”, asked once on each engine.
- Engines queried with web search on, on October 31, 2026. 3 of 175 answers returned an error and are excluded.
- A tool counts as named when the answer mentions it by name, wherever it appears. Results from a single run: AI answers vary from day to day, so treat small gaps as noise.
Questions
Which AI visibility tool does AI recommend most?
In our October 31, 2026 test of 25 buyer questions across 7 AI engines, Profound was named most (119 of 172 answers), followed by Semrush (115), Otterly.AI (113) and Peec AI (113).
Do ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity recommend the same tools?
Largely, yes. In our test the top tools were named by all seven engines; the differences were in how often, not whether.
Why would AI not recommend a new tool even if its website is well optimized?
AI engines build their recommendations mostly from what other sites say: roundups, reviews and community discussion. CiteFinder's own site passed every readiness check and was still named in 0 of 172 answers, because few third-party pages mentioned it yet.
